Technique #1 : The Number-Shape System

To conquer the task of remembering addresses, we can tap into the Number-Shape System. This system involves associating a specific shape or object with each digit, enabling us to create memorable images and narratives.

Let’s associate different shapes for each digit:

0: A ball

1: A pencil

2: A swan

3: A tricycle

4: A sail

5: A glove

6: A hexagon

7: A boomerang

8: An hourglass

9: A balloon

Example 1

Let’s say we want to remember this address – 3856 Maple Lane

Story Time:

Imagine standing in front of a house on Maple Lane. At the entrance, you notice a tricycle (3) parked by the door, invoking a sense of childhood nostalgia. As you step inside, you see an hourglass (8) placed on a shelf in the hallway, reminding you of the preciousness of time. Moving further into the house, you find yourself in a cozy living room with a pair of gloves (5) lying on the couch, symbolizing warmth and comfort. Finally, you step out into the backyard and notice a hexagon-shaped garden (6) filled with vibrant flowers, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.

Example 2

Let’s try to remember this address – 7454 Pine Street

Story Time:

Visualize standing in front of a house on Pine Street. As you approach the entrance, you see a boomerang (7) hanging on the doorknob, signifying an adventurous spirit. Stepping inside, you are greeted by a swan (2), creating a refreshing atmosphere. Moving through the house, you enter a room with a glove (5) placed neatly on the desk, suggesting an active and sporty lifestyle. Finally, you venture into the backyard and discover a sail (4) gracefully swaying in the breeze, invoking a sense of freedom and exploration.

Technique #2 : Chunking

Another effective technique for remembering address is chunking. By grouping numbers into meaningful chunks, you can enhance your ability to recall them.

Example 1

Let’s use the chunking technique to remember the address  12345 Willow Avenue

Step 1: Divide the address into chunks

Chunk 1: 12

Chunk 2: 345

Chunk 3: Willow Avenue

Step 2: Assign a memorable image or keyword to each chunk

Chunk 1: Picture a clock striking twelve.

Chunk 2: Visualize a tree with three branches.

Chunk 3: Imagine a beautiful willow tree

Step 3: Create a vivid mental image combining the chunks

Picture a clock striking twelve (Chunk 1) under a tree with three branches (Chunk 2). The tree is a majestic willow tree (Chunk 3) with long, graceful leaves swaying in the breeze. Imagine yourself standing in front of this picturesque scene, associating the image with the address.
